What Are Dental Implants?
A dental implant is a prosthetic tooth root consisting of a small titanium post that is surgically placed within the jaw. The 4-Step Dental Implant Process
Getting dental implants is a process that involves multiple steps spread out over a matter of months. While the specifics of the dental implant process can vary slightly from patient to patient, it is always broken up into four main steps. Here’s a closer look at what you can expect when you commit to getting dental implants.
Initial Dental Implant Consultation
At your initial consultation, our team will need to take a closer look at your mouth and jawbone with the help of the latest dental technology. Based on what we find, we’ll help you determine whether you are a good candidate for dental implants. We’ll also let you know whether you require bone grafting or other kinds of preliminary work to prepare your mouth and jaw for dental implant posts. And of course, we’ll give you an estimate of the cost as well as how long you can expect the process to take.
Dental Implant Surgery
On the day of your dental implant surgery, a local anesthetic will be used to numb your mouth. You may also receive some form of sedation to help you stay calm and comfortable. Then your gums will be opened, and the implant posts will be inserted into the jawbone. The locations and angles of the implant posts will be determined ahead of time. Once the posts are in place, the gums will be closed. Special caps will be attached to the posts in order to help protect them.
Dental Implant Osseointegration & Abutment
Over the next few months following your dental implant surgery, a process called osseointegration will take place. It will allow your implant posts to slowly merge with your jawbone, thus giving them the stability they need to support replacement teeth.
When osseointegration is complete, you’ll be ready to receive your abutments. These are small metal connector pieces that are attached to your implant posts via a second, smaller surgery. Their purpose is to keep your final prosthesis secured in place.
Delivery of Dental Implant Restoration(s)
Our team will take an impression of your smile, which will be used to design your dental implant prosthesis. Said prosthesis could be a crown, a bridge, or a denture; it depends on how many teeth are being replaced. Rest assured that the prosthesis will be carefully designed with your specific smile in mind, ensuring that it fits properly and looks natural.
The completed prosthesis will be attached to your dental implants during a final appointment. We’ll perform a last-minute check to make sure there aren’t any problems with your bite.
