What Are Dental Implants?

A dental implant is a prosthetic tooth root consisting of a small titanium post that is surgically placed within the jaw. The material itself is not only extremely strong, but the titanium will actually meld with the surrounding bone—just like your regular tooth roots—to create an extremely stable foundation that can serve as the anchor for a crown, bridge, or denture.
The 4-Step Dental Implant Process

Getting dental implants is a process that involves multiple steps spread out over a matter of months. Rest assured that the journey will ultimately be worth it once you’ve achieved the complete, sturdy smile that you deserve. While the specifics of the dental implant process can vary slightly from patient to patient, it is always broken up into four main steps. Here’s a closer look at what you can expect when you commit to getting dental implants.
Initial Dental Implant Consultation

At your initial consultation, our team will need to take a closer look at your mouth and jawbone with the help of the latest dental technology. Based on what we find, we’ll help you determine whether you are a good candidate for dental implants. We’ll also let you know whether you require bone grafting or other kinds of preliminary work to prepare your mouth and jaw for dental implant posts. And of course, we’ll give you an estimate of the cost as well as how long you can expect the process to take.
Dental Implant Surgery

On the day of your dental implant surgery, a local anesthetic will be used to numb your mouth. You may also receive some form of sedation to help you stay calm and comfortable. Then your gums will be opened, and the implant posts will be inserted into the jawbone. The locations and angles of the implant posts will be determined ahead of time. Once the posts are in place, the gums will be closed. Special caps will be attached to the posts in order to help protect them.
Dental Implant Osseointegration & Abutment

Over the next few months following your dental implant surgery, a process called osseointegration will take place. It will allow your implant posts to slowly merge with your jawbone, thus giving them the stability they need to support replacement teeth.
When osseointegration is complete, you’ll be ready to receive your abutments. These are small metal connector pieces that are attached to your implant posts via a second, smaller surgery. Their purpose is to keep your final prosthesis secured in place.
Delivery of Dental Implant Restoration(s)

Our team will take an impression of your smile, which will be used to design your dental implant prosthesis. Said prosthesis could be a crown, a bridge, or a denture; it depends on how many teeth are being replaced. Rest assured that the prosthesis will be carefully designed with your specific smile in mind, ensuring that it fits properly and looks natural.
The completed prosthesis will be attached to your dental implants during a final appointment. We’ll perform a last-minute check to make sure there aren’t any problems with your bite. If any adjustments are needed, we can carry them out before you walk out our front doors with your newly completed smile.
Benefits of Dental Implants

Even though dental implants haven’t been around as long as traditional dentures and bridges, many dentists already consider them to be the gold standard for replacing missing teeth. No matter how many teeth you've lost, the wide range of benefits that dental implants have to offer can make them an excellent choice for re-completing your smile. Below is a closer look at some of the advantages associated with dental implants.
Day-to-Day Benefits

Just like your natural teeth, your dental implants will play an important role in your everyday life, which means you’ll regularly get to enjoy the following benefits:
- Easy to Take Care Of: Caring for dental implants isn’t much different than taking care of your natural teeth. You won’t have to learn a complicated oral hygiene routine or invest in any specialized products; you can simply brush and floss like you normally would.
- A Largely Unrestricted Diet: Dental implants offer better stability and chewing power than traditional dentures. This makes them capable of handling most foods, allowing you to once again eat virtually anything you want.
- Clearer Speech: Sometimes traditional dentures can slip while you’re trying to talk. In contrast, dental implants always stay firmly anchored in place, making it easier to speak clearly and with full confidence in any given situation.
- Enhanced Confidence: Dental implants are very similar to natural teeth in terms of appearance as well as the way they feel. As such, filling the gaps in your smile with dental implants can go a long way toward giving your confidence a boost.
Health Benefits

Since dental implants can mimic the roots of your natural teeth, they can benefit your oral health in ways that other forms of tooth replacement can’t. Here are some key examples:
- Preventing Bone Loss: Normally, your natural teeth stimulate the jawbone to help it maintain its shape. Dental implants can also provide this stimulation, meaning they can put a stop to bone loss (which is a common side effect of missing teeth).
- Preventing Dental Drift: Teeth have a tendency to shift toward empty space in the mouth. As such, if you’re missing a tooth, the remaining teeth will gradually start to move out of alignment. Fortunately, dental implants can fill in the gaps in your grin and keep your natural teeth where they’re supposed to be.
- Healthier Diet: It can be difficult to maintain a healthy diet when there are so many foods that you can’t eat. Dental implants let you enjoy a wider variety of foods so that you can get the nutrition that your body needs.
Long-Term Benefits

Dental implants can make your daily life better, but they also have a number of long-term benefits that are worth considering:
- High Success Rate: It’s very rare for dental implants to fail. In fact, implant posts that have been in the mouth for 20 years have a 95% success rate.
- More Youthful Appearance: Many patients find that dental implants ultimately help them look younger. This can partially be attributed to the fact that the implant posts can prevent bone loss in the jaw, which goes a long way toward avoiding facial collapse.
- Longevity: A well-maintained dental implant can last for decades, meaning it’s less likely to need to be replaced compared to traditional dentures and bridges.
